5 Simple Tips for Professional Development Outside of Work

For additional information about the premiere business consulting firm 2313 Inc, check out our profile on CrunchBase. It’s an age-old problem: You know you need to stay up to date in your field or get more education in order to move up in your company, but you don’t have the resources to take two years out of your life to go to school full-time to get your MBA or other equivalent. But don’t despair; there are plenty of things you can do to build up your credentials for your next career move. Here are five of our favorites. Read books Books are a lot less expensive than college or graduate school courses, and if you’re a self-motivated learner you can get a lot out of reading (or listening to) a chapter or two each night. Considering how many self-improvement books there are in the world, you’re never going to run out of options. Start with classics like The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey and How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie. Then move on to more current books like Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance by Angela Duckworth. Check the reviews before you invest in any books, and you’ll be able to see which ones are the most influential and worth reading. Take an online class There are huge numbers of classes in all disciplines available online for free or cheap. EdX offers free online courses from renowned institutions including Harvard, Berkeley, MIT, Boston University, and even the Sorbonne.  If you’d prefer your college courses to come from Pen State, Johns Hopkins, Stanford, or Duke, look into Coursera. If you want to enhance your software skills, CodeAcademy offers interactive classes in a variety of programming languages. Udemy offers classes in a huge variety of disciplines, and you’re sure to find something at a price point you can manage—but read the reviews before paying for the classes, as some instructors are better than others. Join a nonprofit board Some of the best professional lessons can come from serving on the board of a nonprofit organization. You’ll get experience in thinking strategically, create a deeper impact on your community, and perhaps even awaken or find an outlet for a passion that isn’t related to your day job. If you’re not sure you’re ready to jump into joining a board, your state’s association of nonprofits may offer courses and information about nonprofit governance that can help build your confidence. Attend conferences Professional conferences are a great way to learn about best practices in your industry, connect with others in your field, and interact with thought leaders in your profession. While you do need to pay for conferences, the costs can vary immensely depending on how large or small the conference is. Talk with your employer about whether they might be willing to see if professional training dollars could cover at least part of the cost. Some conferences offer scholarships or reduced fees for professionals earlier in their careers. Interested in improving leadership in your organization? Head over to the 2313 Inc. How to Become More Valuable to Your Organization

How to Become More Valuable to Your Organization

We all want to find satisfaction in our work, and we’re often told the only way to do that is to start your own business. However, not everyone wants to be an entrepreneur. If you work for an organization or company you like, you probably want to stay there. The best way to do so is to develop some of these important traits. Show good character As an employee, you represent your company. How you present yourself, conduct yourself, and interact with your colleagues and customers is just as important as the work your produce. Be honest. Show that you know right from wrong and are willing to do the right thing, even if there is pressure to do otherwise. Build your skills Unless you want to do the same job for the rest of your life, the best thing you can do is to find out what skills are most valuable to your company and learn them. This will keep you relevant and go far to keep you employed. A person who takes the initiative to learn gets noticed, and often gets raises and/or promotions as a result. Find out more about the story of 2313 Inc on CrunchBase. Maintain a positive attitude “Your attitude determines your altitude,” as the old saying goes. When you can approach even difficult tasks with a smile and a can-do approach, you add value to your company. When things go wrong, provide a solution and go to work fixing the problem. Go above and beyond As important as it is to know your job and fulfill your basic responsibilities, it’s even more important to go beyond that. Take the initiative and find innovative ways to be more efficient or productive. Managers notice a self-motivated employee and will seek them out when it comes time to offer promotions. Strive for excellence Your diligence and willingness to do every task to the fullest extent of your ability will cause your manager to take notice. Be dedicated to your work and consistently show that you’re willing to take on extra tasks and exceed your employer’s expectations. See what’s being overlooked Having a vision requires taking notice of things others don’t see as clearly. Observe what’s working well and what isn’t, and proactively offer solutions. Be vocal and visible in your organization so that your ideas and observations don’t go unnoticed. Accept and embrace change Change is a fact of life. Be prepared for your job and your role in the company to change. Your manager will notice your willingness to not only roll with the changes but to spearhead those changes and become an advocate for them. Be careful about office politics Although playing politics can help you move forward, it can cause you to lose credibility with your colleagues, and you could get burned if you align yourself with the wrong “side.” Avoid office politics if and when you can; instead, strive to be open and transparent with your actions. Your colleagues and your manager will appreciate that. By developing these “soft skills” and personal qualities, you will make yourself more valuable to your organization. The Benefits of a Team-First Mindset

The Benefits of a Team-First Mindset

We’ve all encountered a team member with a “me first” mindset, so we know the harm that can come from someone who only operates on the basis of what’s in it for them. On the other hand, a team-first mindset can benefit not just you and your business but your entire team. Here are some reasons to cultivate team-first thinking: For more business, sales, and professional development tips, be sure to visit the 2313 Inc WordPress: https://2313inc.wordpress.com/ A unified team is a high-performing team Most teams have a few high-powered, self-motivated go-getters who’ll do whatever it takes to reach their goals. But what about the rest of the team? Encourage your top performers to share the tricks and tips that help them achieve success. It won’t hurt them in terms of meeting their goals—they’ve already proven they can perform—but it will help the entire company’s bottom line if other team members can learn from them.  A unified team has shared values It’s crucial that all members of your team understand the company’s values and how those values help the company achieve its mission. By ensuring that your team understands those values and abides by them, you’re ensuring that they act in alignment with those values. Shared values also allow the team to discuss proposed projects and see if those projects align with the company’s values, mission, and goals. A unified team gives—and gets—the benefit of the doubt No team member can perform at 100 percent all the time. When the members of a team work together to achieve goals, they are more likely to give their colleagues the benefit of the doubt if they have an off day.  They’re also more likely to take a positive attitude toward stepping in and taking on some extra duties, knowing that the next time they have an off day, someone will do the same for them. A unified team is a committed team When you foster a “team first” mindset, your team is likely to stay with you for the long haul. They’re more likely to cheerfully step up to the plate when extra work is required to reach a company or team goal, because they’re committed to the company’s vision and values. Finally, a committed team has members who help one another, whether that’s with work-related issues or something that’s going on outside of work. A unified team is a happy team Research by Dr. Shawn Achor shows that happy salespeople have 23 percent more energy, are 31 percent more productive, they sell 38 percent more, and they are 300 percent more creative. Happy team members also tend to feel better about their supervisors, colleagues, and the business as a whole. Your team will follow your lead, so keep them on the bright side by embracing a positive “can-do” attitude yourself. Here are some simple steps that will go a long way toward cultivating a “team first” mentality—in yourself and in your team as a whole: View your team as your equals rather than your minions. Don’t ask your team to do anything you wouldn’t do. For example, if you need your team to work extra hours to meet a goal, work those hours along with them instead of going home the minute the clock strikes five. Give your team credit for wins...

10 Things Exceptional Business Leaders Do Daily

10 Things Exceptional Business Leaders Do Daily

The most successful business leaders have gotten this far by perfecting a system. They constantly invest in themselves and in their future through self-improvement and examining the path they’ve taken to the top. If you want to become a better business leader and successfully reach the next level of your career, dedicate time and energy to improve your daily routine. To help refine your daily habits and cultivate new ones, here are 10 things the best business leaders do daily to constantly improve and be exceptional: Re-establish the Vision Business leaders need their company to have a clear understanding of goals and objectives, as well as understand their vision. If employees have the vision defined and explained, they have a sound foundation to translating it into real results. Leaders should take time to share their vision with everyone involved and how they plan to implement it. In addition to explaining how and when the vision will help reach company goals, the business leader should also outline the benefits for everyone to get them on the same page. Set Priorities The most successful leaders are instinctual decision makers.  Having done it so many times throughout their careers, they become immune to the pressure associated with decision-making and extremely intuitive about the process of making the most strategic and best decisions. They know where to start, and where to end. Setting priorities is key to accomplish what needs to get done, and not get distracted by menial tasks. Inspire Passion, Optimism, and Purpose Without a solid team, business leaders don’t have much. A focus on inspiring passion, optimism, and purpose will help a company stay motivated. People are more willing to work for a goal if they’re inspired to be great, and have found a purpose in the work. Learn more about 2313 Inc and what we do on our frequently asked questions page! http://www.2313inc.com/2313incstory/faqs/ Plan Their Work and Work Their Plan Without a set plan every day, improvisation may lead to fatigue. Figure out what needs to happen today, and implement a plan to get it done. It’s not just about planning. Execution can mean everything, and sticking to the plan will always lead you to the goal you’re trying to reach. Ask Smart Questions Never be afraid to re-establish exactly what the goal of the day is. Checking on a team and making sure they understand what’s going on is key. Exceptional business leaders figure out every scenario, and make sure communication is as clear as it can be. Asking the right questions should be a necessity for everyone. Recognize and Celebrate Greatness in Others Credit is due where credit is due, and more than likely, you had some help along the way. Exceptional business leaders surround themselves with the very best, and they recognize this greatness in others instead of thinking they can do it all by themselves. Recognize in others that their help is necessary to find success. Great leaders inspire greatness not only in themselves, but also in others. Delegate When you become overwhelmed with work or can’t figure out a solution, find someone that can. Every business team has their strengths, so play to these when it’s required.  You can do it all, but people working together may just be able to. Looking to join the...
